Lucy Berrones

Lucero “Lucy” Karina Berrones of Elmwood Park enrolled at Triton College to assist her father with his heating and air-conditioning business, JB Refrigeration, Inc. After completing courses to earn a certificate, Berrones discovered her passion for the business world. She then decided to pursue an associate degree from the Triton College School of Business.

Berrones said her instructors at Triton sparked her interest in the industry. “I received all ‘A’s’ in my classes. It became a passion.”

Berrones’ curiosity about finding the right career, along with her family business, initially brought her to Triton.

Growing up in Elmwood Park, she wasn’t sure what path to take. With her father owning a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) company, he suggested she join him in the business.

“I didn’t know anything about tools or hard labor,” she explained. “I thought I could help his business with my technology savviness, accounting abilities and marketing strategies. I figured a certificate from Triton could be helpful.”

After arriving at Triton, Berrones was inspired by business instructors Dr. Gretchen Reyes and Dr. William M. Griffin, which motivated her to complete an associate degree.

“Dr. Reyes made me want to expand my horizons, and she boosted my confidence,” she said. “Dr. Griffin truly cares about his students and wants them all to succeed.”

Berrones will graduate from Triton College in December. She plans on finishing her bachelor’s degree in business online at National Louis University.

“Lucero is multitalented,” said Dr. Griffin, chair of Triton’s Business Department. “I see a very bright future with Lucero. She has such a positive attitude.”

Pursuing a business degree at Triton College provides students with numerous opportunities, including the option to further their education at various colleges and universities in Chicago. Triton’s business courses focus on collaborative, team-based approach to equip students with the skills needed for real-world success. Earning a business degree can accelerate their path to a management position or higher.
